"My publisher was being very accommodating by allowing me to explore different genres, so after Nightmare, a book with zero action scenes, I wanted to do a legitimate Action novel. There were no supernatural elements, but it was still considered Speculative Fiction, because it was set in a (mildly) alternate history.
"I was also determined to write a three-dimensional villain if it killed me, and crime lord Yuri Vasko was the result. But I really loved Nolan and his rigid, unwavering view of right and wrong. And his action scenes were a blast to write.
"Even I was surprised at where this one ultimately led, but it was as if Nolan and Yuri both came alive in my mind and confirmed that this was where their paths had to culminate."
